With sportscar makers now venturing into electrified powertrains, power and torque outputs have made a big jump, more than when turbochargers were adopted. And with this new level of output, the industry is moving into the ‘hyper’ class beyond mere supercars.
Among the companies with this new generation of hyper GTs is Lotus Cars which has the Emeya, a fully electric Hyper-GT that made its world debut in September 2023.
Made in China
The third fully electric model (besides the Evija and Eletre) of the British carmaker, the Emeya is made in China at the same factory in Wuhan as the Eletre Hyper SUV.
The name ‘Emeya’ was chosen to embody the ambition and commitment which Lotus has for this new model. It joins as a flagship model in Lotus’ line-up as part of the company’s vision to become a global performance brand by 2028.
Three versions available
The Emeya is now officially available in Malaysia and Lotus Cars Malaysia is taking orders. Three versions are offered – Emeya, Emeya S and Emeya R – with prices starting from RM575,000 (booking fee RM5,000).
At any other time before, the cars would have cost much more but thanks to the duty-exemption given by the government for fully electric vehicles (till the end of 2025), they are now attractively priced.
As mentioned earlier, powertrain outputs of hypercars are at new levels and for the Emeya, depending on the version, the power output ranges from 450 kW (612 bhp) to 605 kW (918 bhp), with maximum torque as high as 985 Nm.
All versions have dual motors for all-wheel drive with Lotus ICC Intelligent Torque Distribution for optimum delivery to the road. The top Emeya R version is said to be able to reach a top speed of more than 250 km/h and sprint from 0 – 100km/h in under 2.78 seconds.
150 kms in 5 minutes
When connected to a rapid 350 kW DC fast-charger, just 5 minutes can provide 150 kms of range and it should take 18 minutes for the battery pack to recharge from 10% to 80%.
The Emeya can extend its range by 150 kms with just a five-minute charge, and has the capability to boost its range from 10% to 80% on an 18-minute charge. The range is claimed to be between 490 kms and 600 kms, depending on the version.
With a 400 kW DC charger, Lotus Cars has reported a record time of 14 minutes for the 10% to 80% charge.
Superior aerodynamics
The Emeya is designed and engineered with a host of advanced active and innovative aerodynamic features to firmly establish class-leading levels of downforce. These include the pioneering active front grille, rear diffuser and rear spoiler and, combined with a low centre of gravity that Lotus calls ‘hyperstance’, the car’s stability is greatly enhanced.
The electronically-controlled air suspension system of the Emeya uses advanced onboard sensors that ‘feel’ the road 1,000 times a second, and adjustments are constantly made to provide the smoothest ride as surface conditions change.
Intelligent and advanced technology features make the Emeya safer to drive at high speeds allowing the driver to explore the very high performance limits confidently.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) actively monitor the surrounding situation and also take pro-active actions when necessary to prevent collisions, while crucial information is shown on an industry leading 55-inch projected augmented reality (AR) head-up display (HUD).
Sustainable materials
Like other carmakers, Lotus pays attention to sustainability to reduce its carbon footprint. The advanced materials for the Emeya are sustainably-sourced and consciously designed This includes a new luxury thread made from repurposed fibres from the fashion industry – as well as PVD aluminium, Alcantara, Nappa leather, and Ultrafabrics PU.
