Volvo Car Malaysia shifts to locally-assembled EX30 stock

When Volvo Car Malaysia launched the Volvo EX30 in September 2024, it started off with CBU (completely built-up) units imported from the factory in China. Local assembly at the plant in Shah Alam, Selangor was also underway but they offered the CBU units to the early customers. The Shah Alam plant also exports its vehicles to neighbouring countries.

With all those units delivered by the end of 2024, the company is now shifting to the locally-assembled stock and is accepting bookings. While there were three versions offered at launch, the locally-assembled range has only two. The one that is no longer available is the EX30 Plus which was the cheapest version priced at RM188,888.

The other two versions are the Ultra and Ultra Twin Performance, priced at RM208,888 and RM228,888, respectively. The prices are the same as for the CBU units which were not subjected to any taxes. The government’s duty-free incentive for EVs imported CBU ends on December 31, 2025 but those which are assembled locally can continue to enjoy the tax-free incentive till the end of 2027.

Customers can choose from 3 colour options – Cloud Blue, Vapour Grey, and Crystal White (the yellow seen during the launch does not seem to be offered). Those who have already booked the EX30 will get their SUVs this week.

The MY25 EX30 Ultra comes with a rear-mounted motor producing 272 ps/343 Nm while the Ultra Twin Performance version has motors on the front and rear axles to give all-wheel drive. This version has a higher output of 428 ps/543 Nm.

Both EX30s come with a 69 kWh NMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide) battery which has a good balance of energy density, power density and cycle life. The claimed range is up to 476 kms for the Ultra and up to 450 kms for the Ultra Twin Performance.

To recharge the battery from fully empty would take 8 hours with AC power supply using the 11 kW on-board charger. With a DC fast-charger, the time from 10% to 80% can be 28 minutes if the power supply is at 175 kW.
