In the global auto industry, models typically change generations every 4 to 5 years, with a new generation bringing a new design, new technologies and other features that have become available over the 5 years.
This cycle is generally applicable to automakers with very large volumes (per model) but for those which may not have the large volumes, then they usually stretch out the cycle life to have more units produced. This helps lower the unit cost which, in turn, allows for more competitive pricing. The alternative is to price higher, which would make it challenging to the sales people.
Proton is one of those automakers (though not the only one) that has to stretch its model cycles for this reason. The X70, which was launched in December 2018 is into its fifth year now, still in the first generation. Of course, over the past 5 years, there have been updates to maintain ‘freshness’ without price changes.
Meaningful upgrades
Nevertheless, while Proton cannot change models every 5 years (for now), the updates it makes are usually meaningful, enhancing the value of the model and even keeping it on par specs-wise with younger rivals in the market.
Soon, Proton will launch the upgraded X70 which not only gets a significantly refreshed exterior but also added features within.
Appla CarPlay & Android Auto
Of significance is that the larger 12.3-inch infotainment system now includes Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, the two must-haves for connectivity in modern cars. Nappa leather with a stone grey colour also covers the seats and there is a multicolour rhythmic ambient light system.
Extra capability for PROTON Link app
The PROTON Link app is a service application which connects the owner with the vehicle. It not only real-time vehicle conditions shows but also has remote control for opening the tailgate, opening/closing the windows to ventilate the cabin and other functions.
Now it gains extended capability to start the engine remotely which allows the air-conditioner to run and start cooling the cabin before you get in.
The X70 was a bit ahead of its time when it already had Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) at the time of launch, so the system remains on par with that of other SUVs. For the new model, Proton has upgraded it with an ADAS level 2 system for improved safety and convenience.
Reward for early birds
The price is not being revealed yet, but Proton gives assurance that like the latest X50, the new X70 ‘will have an amazing price’. A deposit of RM500 at an authorised Proton dealership will secure one of the first units and early birds will be rewarded with a special package.
