The origins of the Renault Captur go back 13 years when a concept car of the same name was displayed at major motorshows. It was one of 6 concept models that showed the future of Renault’s design language and many elements were adopted for the production model that went on sale in 2013.
Right timing for market entry
As a compact SUV, it arrived at the right time when demand for B-segment SUVs began to grow rapidly. Its distinctive styling and practical features as well as attractive price points made it a segment leader in the European market. Some 1.2 million units of the first generation were sold worldwide.
One of the features which it popularised was the two-tone exterior colour scheme with a different colour for the roof. Though available as an option from some carmakers, it was not offered in a high-volume way but Renault started the trend which today is also adopted by other carmakers.

The Captur was also sold in other markets, and produced in Russia, India, Latin America and South Korea (as the Renault Samsung QM3). It was also assembled in Malaysia at the Tan Chong Motor Assemblies plant which had earlier also assembled the Kangoo.
Maintaining the success fornula
The current generation made its debut in mid-2019 and uses the Renault Alliance’s CMF-B platform. It follows the crossover styling themes of the original which were a strong selling point, so the designers went for evolutionary styling rather than making a significant departure from before.
Renault Samsung and Mitsubishi versions
The second generation also continues to be sold as a Renault Samsung model and Mitsubishi Motors (a member of the Alliance) is also using it for the new version of its ASX for the European market.
After 4 years on the market, it’s time for a facelift and to update the styling, elements of the latest Scenic E-Tech are used for a more premium image. The design language plays on light and matter with taut lines and precise detailing, creating a more stylish and dynamic effect.
Versatility still the strong point
Besides the design flair, versatility is still a strong point of the Captur. With the 2630 mm wheelbase within a 4.23-metre long body, there is also generous interior space. The Captur (even in its first generation) is one of the few crossovers with a sliding rear seat to allow for extra legroom or extra cargo volume (which can be up to 536 litres).
Renault is not revealing the full technical details at this time, other than saying that there will be up to 5 powertrain choices (depending on the market), including a 145-bhp E-Tech hybrid option. The suspension is also said to be revised and the steering system recalibrated.
The Extended Grip system is available for some versions. This system optimises traction for FWD drivetrains by intelligent use of the brakes when there is wheel-slip.
Google built-in
Inside, the cabin has new upholstery and new dashboard screens. The multimedia system with OpenR Link interface has Google built-in with Android Automotive 12, a world first in the B segment.
The entirely new electronic architecture enhances safety levels, with a range of latest-generation driving aids including the predictive hybrid driving function and Active Driver Assist that allows Level 2 autonomous driving.
More in tune with the times
“More than 10 years ago, Renault broke with the codes of the B-segment by infusing Captur with the DNA of the ‘voiture à vivre’ (car for living). This vision has been embodied by a maximum of comfort: a high driving position, a livable interior that can be adapted to suit the lives of the driver and passengers. Building on its success, with over 2 million vehicles sold, Captur continues to stand out from the crowd. It is even more in tune with the times, with a new, more assertive design, a E-Tech full hybrid engine, and OpenR Link with integrated Google. These are all useful technologies, and they’re being acclaimed by our customers,” said Fabrice Cambolive, CEO Renault brand.
