Like its principal, Toyota Motor Corporation, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is also very much committed to environmental sustainability as a socially responsible corporate citizen. It aims to create a sustainable and greener future for generations to come by reducing its environmental footprint which will have a positive impact on society.
One of its initiatives in pursuit of this objective has been through active participation in the UMW Green Shoots Initiative (UGS), a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programme of the UMW Group which has been driven by UMWT and Perodua (which is 38% owned by UMW) since 2021.
The recent UGS event at the Kubang Badak Mangrove Reserve, Langkawi, achieved a significant milestone with the planting of 5,900 trees, bringing the total number of trees planted in 2023 to 12,000. This includes 6,100 trees planted in Tanjung Tuan in March.
Besides dedicated volunteers from UMWT and its dealers, the event also had the enthusiastic participation of MRSM Langkawi’s students and teachers, the local community of Kampung Kubang Badak, and members of the Malaysian Nature Society.
In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) and in support of the National 100-million Tree-Planting Campaign 2020-2050, the UGS Initiative signifies a substantial step toward a greener and more sustainable future. Under the theme ‘Green Malaysia. Our Trees. Our Life.’, the initiative addresses climate change and environmental conservation.
This initiative is in line with Toyota Global commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This goal encompasses a practical and sustainable reduction in CO2 emissions, recognising that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach may not be sufficient. Therefore, a multi-pathway approach, including choices such as Hybrid Electric Vehicles, is imperative. Through tree planting and offsetting CO2 emissions, UMWT actively contributes to the larger mission of creating a sustainable future.
“Carbon is our No.1 enemy,” said Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor. “Therefore, taking care of the environment is a shared responsibility for a better future. Through initiatives like UGS, we aspire to embrace our philosophy of ‘Move Your World’, redefining mobility as an integral facet of daily life.”
“Toyota firmly believes in the power of innovation and sustainable practices. Our goal is not only carbon neutrality but also the realisation of a happier, more connected society. This is where individuals can make choices aligned with their values and lifestyles,” he added.
The strategic focus on planting mangrove trees amplifies the positive impact on the environment. Mangroves act as a natural barrier against erosion, improve water quality by filtering pollutants, and provide crucial habitats for a diverse range of wildlife.
