For those who have like using motorcycle handlebars to steer – instead of the traditional steering wheel – Toyota has a cockpit concept which proposes just such an idea. Shown in a concept version of the latest Land Cruiser Prado at the Japan Mobility Show which is on this week, the concept known as NEO Steer also integrates the functions of the accelerator and brake pedals into the ‘steering controller’.
Useful for those with lower limb impairments
A sweeping field of vision made possible by the steering wheel’s irregular profile, and the roomy pedal-free floor space, enable smooth entry and exit. It also offers safe, intuitive hand-operated driving for users with lower limb impairments.
What is not mentioned is that the steering system could be steer-by-wire, which is expected to be the next generation of steering systems whereby there is no longer a mechanical connection (like the long shaft) to the wheels. Instead, the angle of the wheels will be controlled by electronic signals sent to a steering rack actuator.
Similar alternative idea in two models
For now, NEO Steer is very much just a concept and Toyota is not thinking about introducing it in the Land Cruiser or any other model. However, the alternative steering controller in the form of a yoke (like in an aircraft) has appeared in the Lexus RZ 450e sold in certain markets, as well as the Tesla Model S.
