The IMV – Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle – series introduced by Toyota 20 years ago has been a very successful project for Toyota. It was not only about developing new models but also the first time Toyota had moved production and even development to bases outside Japan.
The IMV series was developed under the leadership of Akio Toyoda, then CEO for the Asia Region and current Chairman of the Board. The IMV series was developed with local engineers in the spirit of genchi-genbutsu, ensuring the vehicles were developed to meet the specific needs of customers in the markets.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve and customer needs diversify, the lifestyles of customers in Thailand – the biggest IMV market – also continues to change. This prompted Toyota to review the product line and return to its origins to create an IMV pick-up truck that is affordable and meets the needs of today’s customers.
Referred to as IMV 0, the new model carries the Hilux Champ name but is very different in appearance from the current Hilux. It is presented as a mobility product for both commercial use as well as for personal use for recreational activities. Prices range from 459,000 to 577,000 baht (RM61,300 – RM77,000).
Customisation options for customers
For the Thai market, the 5.3-metre long Hilux Champ will be available in short and long-wheelbase versions with a single cab. A basic version with a flat deck is also available and customers will be able to customise the truck with accessories from more than 100 manufacturers in Thailand.
Three engine types will be offered – 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel. Customers can choose either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions, but all versions will have only rear-wheel drive.
Tamaraw in the Philippines
It’s not known what other markets will get the Hilux Champ, but it will be built in the Philippines as well and be sold as the Tamaraw, an iconic model in the market’s history. Certainly, distributors in other ASEAN markets would want it as well, and as it is a truck, it can be imported from Thailand without any duties under the AFTA Agreement.
