While most carmakers usually phase introductions of new models in different markets, Tesla’s business model of selling its cars and SUVs only via its online channel means it can launch a new model globally on the same day. It has production hubs in each hemisphere so it is a matter of assigning orders to the closest facility or Gigafactory, as its manufacturing sites are called.
This means that with the Malaysian market having become an official market for EV company since the middle of 2023, Tesla fans here can also order the very latest model which is the new Model 3 Performance launched globally today. Its duty-free base price applicable nationwide starts at RM242,000 which makes it the most expensive Model 3. The Rear-Wheel drive starts at RM189,000 while the Long Range AWD starts from RM218.000.
The Model 3 is one of the top-selling EVs in the world (last year, the Model Y was the bestselling car in the world) and, in its new Performance form, has received an updated interior and exterior to supplement the Ludicrous Mode. Ludicrous Mode was once available in the Performance trim of Model S and Model X produced between 2016 and 2021.
The Model 3 Performance has electric motors at the front and rear and its new Performance drive unit is the most powerful ever fitted to a Model 3. It produces the equivalent of 460 ps horsepower peak output to send the car from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.1 seconds and tops out at 262 km/h.
The battery pack can provide a range of up to 528 kms, which puts it between the Model 3 Long Range AWD (629 kms) and Rear-Wheel Drive (513 kms) models. Like other Teslas, this new version can also take full advantage of the high-powered Superchargers with DC supply for fast recharging, or from Destination Chargers which have AC supply.
To ensure that higher performance can be enjoyed safely, there is a more capable chassis with an all-new adaptive suspension system that enhances handling without sacrificing ride comfort. The latest Track Mode V3 manages the suspension, chassis and powertrain controls for optimum performance and allow customized handling balance, stability control and regenerative braking when driving on a track.
Behind the lightweight forged Performance wheels (20 inches with standard spec) are larger brake rotors, calipers and performance brake pads to provide stronger stopping power and consistent braking at all speeds.
Sharing the same styling as the other Model 3 versions, the Performance is distinguished by a larger rear spoiler and comes with the iconic red calipers and a ‘Ludicrous Mode’ badge on the rear bumper.
The premium interior appointments include carbonfibre details and new ventilated sport seats with enhanced bolstering and a deeper, more engaging driving position. The audio system designed by Tesla comes with 17 speakers, dual subwoofers and dual amplifiers, and rear passengers have their own 8-inch display touchscreen between the front seats to manage climate controls, Bluetooth connectivity and entertainment.
The Model 3 is covered by Tesla’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty which is 4 years/80,000 kms (whichever comes first) for the basic vehicle; 5 years/100,000 kms for the Supplemental Restraint System; and 8 years/192,000 kms for the Battery and Drive Unit.
