Besides being pro-active in establishing its recharging network of Superchargers before the first cars are delivered, Tesla Malaysia is also offering customers a free home charger. The offer, known as the Tesla Home Charging Program, is for customers who buy (via its online channel) a Tesla vehicle before the end of October 2023.
Customers will be given a Wall Connector for installation at a designated home address. This will be suitable for those who live in bungalows or terrace houses with their own car porch or garage.
They will be able to recharge their vehicle at any time and can ‘refill’ enough electricity for 71 kms of range within an hour, according to the carmaker. However, the charging rate will not be as fast as with a Supercharger.
Tesla Malaysia doesn’t indicate how much the Wall Connector costs although presumably it is made by the carmaker, just like its high-powered DC Superchargers. Home chargers for EVs (also known as Wallboxes) have prices between RM3,000 and RM8,000, depending on the type.
3-phase electrical system
Additionally, the home electrical system should be 3-phase to handle higher power supply. Newer homes generally would have 3-phase wiring but older ones should be upgraded. That will incur additional cost but it is advisable for safety.
For now, Tesla Malaysia is offering only the Model Y, priced from RM199,000 in Malaysia. Those who book now will get their cars in early 2024.
