“Tesla embraces the mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy and commits to popularising the use of electric vehicles by implementing price adjustment on selected trims of the Model 3 and the Model Y in Malaysia” is how the press release from the company’s Malaysian office starts off.
But this move is not just in the Malaysian market, where the brand has been less than a year. Price cuts are also being implemented in many of its markets worldwide as sales show signs of slowing down. And, of course, there’s also increasing competition in the EV market.
RM8,000 drop in prices
In Malaysia, the prices of the Model 3 and Model Y are now RM8,000 lower than before, bringing base prices (without insurance) to RM181,000 and RM191,000, respectively. How much a buyer finally pays for the car depends on the options chosen which can add up to quite a lot.
In its absolute base spec, you can get the Model 3 only in white and if you want any other body colour, then you have to pay an extra RM5,000 to RM11,500. Likewise for the interior which comes standard in black and to have it in white costs another RM5,000.
And as for the really high-tech systems which you have read about, the Enhanced Autopilot costs RM16,000 and Full Self-Driving Capability will add RM32,000. The Enhanced Autopilot system current has navigation linked functions and auto lane-change but will soon also be available with automatic parking and Summon, a feature where you can send a message to the car to come to you.
