Stellantis Malaysia has launched the new Peugeot 408 as its first product since beginning operations this year. Assembled locally at Stellantis’ own factory (acquired from the NAZA Group) in Gurun, Kedah, the 408 is available in three versions – Allure at RM146,055, Premium at RM166,055 and GT RM196,055.
Though the price range has a spread of RM50,000, all three versions use the same engine, a PureTech 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 218 ps/300 Nm which goes to the front wheels through an 8speed automatic transmission.
The sporty fastback form is 4687 mm long, which is comparable to a Honda Civic Sedan, and slightly longer than a Toyota Corolla and Mazda3. It has a generous body width of 1859 mm and the roofline is at 1487 mm. With a wheelbase of 2787 mm, the cabin should offer comfortable space front and rear.
As would be expected of a European product, the equipment levels tend to be more on the premium side though the cheapest version comes with ‘Comfort Vinyl’ upholstery. All three versions have the i-Cockpit display which mimics a HUD (without the higher cost), with the GT having a more advanced 3D presentation with additional personalisation.
Peugeot doesn’t seem to have any name for its integrated active safety advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS) but the list of systems is comparable to the ADAS in other cars in the market. These include autonomous braking (with stop and go), blind sport monitoring, adaptive cruise control , active lane departure alert and rear cross traffic alert.
The factory warranty is for 3 years but Stellantis Malaysia is offering the 408 with an extended warranty which stretches coverage up to 7 years, or a maximum of 200,000 kms. Mindful of how some extended warranties have coverage that differs from the original warranties, the company emphasises that the items covered for the additional 4 years are not reduced.
