smart Malaysia network expands with 2 more outlets

While much attention has been focussed on the Proton e.MAS 7 in recent months, there have also been development with smart, the other brand handled by PRO-NET, Proton’s subsidiary dedicated to New Energy Vehicles.

By the end of its first year, there were 9 outlets selling the EV model jointly developed by Geely and Mercedes-Benz. Recently, another two were added in Kuantan, Pahang and Kuching, Sarawak.

smart Kuantan is operated by HK Electra which is also a leading Proton dealer with 17 years of association with the automaker. The new smart showroom in Indera Mahkota has a 695 sq. metre space to display up to 4 vehicles. There are also 6 charging points (two being 120 kW DC fast chargers) for EVs on-site which will be welcome by EV owners on the East Coast.

smart Kuching is operated by Ghee Hua Co. Sdn Bhd which has been in the automotive business sine 1968 and is a well known company in the state capital.

“Our expansion into Kuantan and Kuching reflects the growing demand for premium EVs in Malaysia. smart Malaysia is committed to making EV ownership more accessible through an expanded dealer network and enhanced customer experiences,” said Zhang Qiang, CEO of smart Malaysia.

smart #5 EV [2024]
The #1 and #3 are currently available in Malaysia and it is likely that the larger #5 (left) will appear in showrooms during 2025.
smart was among the top 10 EV brands in Malaysia in 2024, with 603 units sold. The range currently available in Malaysia consists of the #1 and the larger #3 (refer to them as hashtag 1 and hashtag 3). A larger SUV model – the #5 – was launched in Australia with deliveries starting in China a few months ago. As Malaysia is a priority market for smart, it will probably be in local showrooms sometime this year.
