Sales during the first month of the year are usually unpredictable. Some years may see a dip after the high of December when there were lots of promotions and a big push to move stock. Other years, the high demand spills over to January, especially as customers may want their cars delivered in the new year. It can make a difference in resale value later on.
Best start since 2013
For Proton, it was a good start – in fact the best start to a year since 2013 – as 12,882 units domestic and export) were sold. Proton’s intelligence shows that the Malaysian carmaker was the only brand to record an increase compared to December.
The increase was 1.3% but comparing the same month’s volume in 2023, there was an increase of 10.3%. Proton estimates January total sales volume to be 66,134 units, which would give is a share of 19.5%, 3.3% more than in December.
Strong start for S70 deliveries
Deliveries of the newest addition to the Proton line-up, the S70, have begun with a commendable 1,442 cars to the first of over 8,000 customers who are waiting. Exports also started to Brunei where the S70 will be launched in February.
The X50 is the most popular SUV in Malaysia and started the year with 2,002 units delivered around the country. Its popularity remains high even more than 3 years after launch as it tops the SUV B-segment. The range-topping X90 also remained the leader in the SUV D-segment with 365 units delivered.
After ending 2023 with 70,184 units sold, the Saga started 2024 strongly with 6,129 units delivered. Notably, sales for the Iriz jumped by 7% to 523 units.
