After a ‘quiet’ month in April due to the festive holidays, the new car market regained its momentum in May with volume growth both on a year-on-year and month-on-month comparison, This was reflected in Proton’s sales numbers which were 13.6% higher than for the previous month, with 12,522 units registered nationwide as well as exported.
With the addition of the volume for May, the Malaysian carmaker’s cumulative volume for the first 5 months of the year has reached 62,697 units, which is estimated to be 19% of the market for 2024. The Total Industry Volume (TIV) of new vehicle sales is estimated to have grown by 8.8% over the 2023 TIV to 330,236 units.
X90 and S70 lead segments
Proton’s two youngest models – the X90 and S70 – dominate the SUV D-segment and sedan C-segment, respectively. The X90 regained its position as the most popular D-segment SUV in Malaysia with 364 units sold, while the S70 saw a 23% increase in sales to 2,011 units from 1,635 units in April. Almost 10,000 units of the sedan have been sold in the first 5 months of the year.
However, it is still the evergreen Saga which remains the brand’s most popular model and in May, the cumulative volume for 2024 increased to 29,237 units with the addition of another 6,119 units.
Growing export sales
Exports are of great importance to Proton’s long-term business and new markets are being added such as Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh and Iraq. Export sales have steadily grown and May exports totalled 509 units, the largest shipment in 2024. Since February this year, the top export model has been the Saga which has contributed the most to bring cumulative export sales to 1,344 units.
“With the cumulative TIV until May already making up 44.6% of Malaysia Automotive Association’s 2024 forecast of 740,000 units, we believe there is still room for growth in the local automotive industry. Entering the second half of 2024, Proton will be focusing on growing sales via updates to our existing models while also concurrently taking our first steps towards entering the EV market. It is not a question of if but when Proton will be revealing our own electric vehicles so do pay close attention as there are many exciting announcements on the horizon!,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.
