PLUS expects up to 2.2 million vehicles on its highways (including the East Coast highway) during the coming Hari Raya holiday period. This is 20% more than the volume on normal days and the highest volumes will be March 27 – 29 and April 4 – 6.
To manage traffic more efficiently during this festive season, PLUS will activate Smartlanes at 28 traffic-concentrated locations so as to provide an additional lane which can help ease congestion. The number is 3 more than during the previous Chinese New Year festive season.
How to identify Smartlanes
Sections of the highways where there are Smartlanes are identified by yellow signboards at their start and end. When they are active, there will be a flashing green light on the signboards. This means that motorists can use the Smartlanes which are normally emergency lanes that cannot be driven on (only for vehicles to stop in emergencies).
PLUS advises motorists to observe the speed limits and recommends a speed of 60 km/h in the Smartlanes. The lanes are meant to ease traffic flow and should not be treated as overtaking lanes.
