France is strongly associated with fashion and design and the French pride themselves in being leaders where fashion is concerned. It’s therefore appropriate that Stellantis Malaysia chose to collaborate with the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2024 (KLFW 2024) with its French brand, Peugeot.
For its 12th year, the premier fashion event in the region included a special segment called ‘Design to Sustain’ which had the theme of ‘Capturing Allure’. Like sustainability, allure is also embedded in Peugeot’s brand vision.
To inspire the young and aspiring fashion designer finalists for the 6th KLFW Designer Search was the Peugeot 408, launched in Malaysia just a few months ago. It was the first time the KLFW Designer Search collaborated with an automotive brand.
The 15 finalists showcased their innovative pieces, from sketches and brought to life with recycled materials, proving that sustainability can be synonymous with style.
The ‘Design to Sustain’ contest workshop had begun on June 16 where a total of 63 artists had to submit three womenswear sketches inspired by the theme ‘Capturing Allure’ and take part in a live fashion pitch. Once narrowed down, the top 15 were tasked to showcase two looks each at the Grand Finale held at Suria KLCC Mall Esplanade.
One of the conditions was that upcycled materials from Life Line Clothing Malaysia, one of the country’s largest zero waste textiles collector, had to be utilised.
The three winners were Mei Xuan Tieo, 18, with her collection entitled ‘Ephemeral Reverie’; Raja Irfan, 25, with ‘Eternal Allure’; and Salahuddin Hilmi, 26, with ‘Rockstar’. They captivated the audience and judges alike with their exceptional creativity, originality, innovation, and technical finesse.
As winners, they will have the exclusive opportunity to showcase their full collections at KLFW 2025 and the Lao Fashion Week: Zero Waste this October.
“Our goal is to build a future where mobility and the environment coexist harmoniously, and KL Fashion Week has been an incredible partner in this journey. And we are very excited to see how the alluring design and language of attraction of the 408 managed to inspire and play a role as a muse for these designers. Furthermore, what’s more important is creating a platform for these extraordinary talented designers whose designs have the power to inspire, to change perceptions, and to drive positive change,” said Jamie Francis Morais, Managing Director of Stellantis Malaysia.
