Petron launches road safety programme for Hari Raya

Among the many different industries, companies in the petroleum industry are very conscious of the need for awareness of safe practices on their sites as well as to encourage their customers to be safety-conscious. At any event, for example, there will always be a safety briefing before starting to ensure that everyone is aware of what to do in an emergency.

With the upcoming Hari Raya festive period when many Malaysians will be travelling, Petron Malaysia, in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), has launched its road safety programme to raise awareness on the importance of safe driving practices.

“Safety has always been a priority at Petron. We have a program specifically for schools and universities in areas with high fatality rates. This aims to educate new drivers and riders in line with the Ministry of Transport’s Road Safety Plan 2022 – 2030, which seeks to achieve a 50% reduction in road deaths by 2030, ultimately aiming for zero fatalities,” said Shaliza Mohd. Sidek, Head of Retail Business at Petron Malaysia.

Go-To-Safety-Point
She added that the company’s strategic partnership with the PDRM for the Go-To-Safety-Point (GTSP) program transforms Petron stations into safe shelters where the public can seek assistance during emergencies.

“Through this programme, the service stations nationwide now function as first-aid centres for individuals who need immediate assistance, whether due to crime or accidents. The main objective of the GTSP is to provide a safe location for individuals who need immediate assistance. In addition, the GTSP can open up opportunities for companies to fulfil their corporate social responsibilities,” she explained.

Since 2013, when Petron began full-scale operations in the Malaysian market, it has transformed most of the service stations into community assistance centres through the GTSP programme. In 2024, PDRM recognised 54 Petron service station dealers for their outstanding contributions to this program.

Dangers of micro-sleep
Other companies have also joined Petron in its road safety programme which will increase awareness of the dangers of micro-sleep, as well as provide free vehicle inspections.

”Road safety is a shared responsibility of both drivers and pedestrians not only during high-traffic periods but at all times. PDRM remains committed to working closely with our partners to promote awareness, enforce safety measures, and ensure safer journeys for all Malaysians,” said Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department Director, Police Commissioner Datuk Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad.
