Perodua Bezza outsells Myvi in first six months of 2023

The Perodua Myvi is ‘King’ to Malaysians in various ways and in sales, it has also topped the charts for many years. This year, however, it’s been overtaken by the Bezza sedan during the first 6 months of the year.

According to Perodua, 40,555 units of the small sedan – a popular choice of e-hailing drivers – were registered nationwide while the number for the Myvi was 32,319 units. In third place for the brand’s models was the Axia, with 28,199 units registered.

The Bezza, available with 1-litre and 1.3-litre engines, is a popular choice of e-hailing drivers as it can go up to 22.8 kms/litre (with manual transmission). Prices range from RM34,850 to RM49,980.

13.6% increase in sales
The three models were among the 144,690 vehicles delivered by the Malaysian carmaker between January and June 2023, an increase of 13.6% over the volume for the same period in 2022 when 127,343 units were delivered.

The two factories at the Perodua manufacturing complex in Sg. Choh produced a total of 153,813 vehicles, 17% more than the output during the same period in 2022. According to Perodua President & CEO, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, the higher production was due to better supply of parts as well as improved production efficiency.

Shorter time to assemble vehicles
“Among the notable improvements we have made are the faster takt time (the time it takes to produce a vehicle) from 1.35 minutes to 1.25 minutes at our Perodua Global Manufacturing plant,” Dato’ Sri Zainal said.

“The bulk of the production performance of this year so far was achieved in the first quarter of 2023 as Perodua went all out to meet its PENJANA obligations [to deliver the vehicles exempted from sales tax],” he said. He added that Perodua is on track to meet its 330,000 production and 314,000 registration targets for 2023 as the company will further improve on its operational efficiencies.

Challenges ahead
Dato’ Sri Zainal said that while existing bookings are encouraging, there are potential challenges ahead, ranging from potential higher financing costs and intermittent supply shortages. “These challenges notwithstanding, we stand firm on our targets, and we thank our valued customers for their support and patience. Our top priority is to continue reducing our customers’ waiting time as well as further improve our service quality,” he said.
