Once in a while, automakers will come up with some crazy idea to promote a new model and sometimes it also sets a world record. The latest one is by Nissan in Europe where its latest Qashqai crossover SUV has done a bungee jump.
For those who still don’t know what a bungee jump is, it’s one of those heart=stopping activities where a person whose feet are attached to a long elastic cord jumps off a very high tower or platform. The heights of towers from which the jumps can be over 220 metres.
Intended to invoke the spirit of the model’s historic TV commercials, the Qashqai was dropped from a height of 65 metres, which has set a world record for the highest bungee jump with a car and will be listed in the Guinness World Records.
Part of the TV campaign for the new model, the vehicle was placed on a 65-metre-high basket and there was also a professional stuntman on board! No, it wasn’t one of the Top Gear bunch who were known for crazy stunts with cars in the past.
The feat was done in the Paris region by the staff of Nissan France, in collaboration with its agencies FUSE and Nissan United, and the technical teams of the BBC. Officials from the Guinness World Records organisation were also present and validated the feat as a new world record.
“This is the kind of daring and therefore furiously essential challenge that we love at Nissan. The brand has always shown its ability to innovate and shake up habits with audacity and sometimes even impertinence. In its various TV spots, the Qashqai has tried skateboarding, surfing, paintball… each time thrilling activities. The new campaign will see it jumping from building to building. The idea of a bungee jump to symbolize the personality of the new Qashqai quickly came to mind,” explained Jerome Biguet, Marketing Director of Nissan France.
