Next public appearance of Chery OMODA E5 EV this Sunday

Over the past year, the Malaysian car market has seen an influx of new brands from China (and some more are coming this year!). The brands, which include Chery, have rushed to the market as the government has given tax exemption for battery electric vehicles, which Chinese carmakers are strong in. As a result of the Chinese government’s push in new energy vehicles since 2009, the country’s auto industry has switched to electrified vehicles faster than in other countries.

Although Chery’s current range (for the Malaysian market) does not have an EV, that will soon change. By March this year, Chery Malaysia will launch the OMODA E5 EV which has already been previewed at various events.

One event was the at the opening of a new dealership in Johor, and during a roadshow in Kuala Lumpur around Christmas, an OMODA E5 was shown powering the lights of a Christmas tree. Like many of the latest EVs, the Chery model has V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability which allows electricity from the battery pack to be used to power external devices.

Lithium-iron phosphate battery pack
The lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack has high energy density so it has a greater storage capacity of 61 kWh. It can give the vehicle a range claimed to be up to 450 kms from a fully charged pack. With a DC charging station, the time to recharge from 30% to 80% is said to be within 30 minutes.

Due to their chemistry, LFP batteries are safer as they have a lower risk of catching fire and burning up the vehicle. They also have a longer service life which means replacement may not be necessary at the same frequency as other battery types. Furthermore, LFP batteries are more environment-friendly as they do not contain harmful heavy metals such as cobalt or nickel.
