The Genesis GV80 Coupe makes its debut in the coupe SUV segment, alongside with an updated GV80. The enhanced GV80 is the first model change in over 3 years, and has the distinct signature of the base model with a comprehensive interior redesign. Over 170,000 units have been sold in the luxury SUV market since its global debut in January 2020.
More emotional and performance-oriented model
The GV80 Coupe is all-new with a more distinctive design package, encompassing a dynamic exterior. It draws on the approach taken in the GV80 Coupe Concept (shown in April this year) for Genesis’ more emotional and performance-oriented models to come.
The high-performance image, boasting an elegant yet daring silhouette, featuring the MLA-powered LED headlamps and the double-layered Crest Grille like the re-designed GV80. The frontal appearance is further accentuated with an expanded air intake, Active Air Flap, and 4 air vents which improve engine cooling.
When viewed from the side, the arch-shaped Parabolic Line spanning the body and the low, sloping roofline complete the strong and dynamic exterior design. At the rear, the GV80 Coupe has a unique design with LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps and a wide integrated auxiliary brake light on the tailgate. A centrally descending rear spoiler adds a sporty touch.
Turbocharger + electric supercharger
The GV80 Coupe’s two powertrain choices include a 3.5-litre engine with a turbocharger and 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C) which produces 415 ps/550 Nm. This innovative engine compresses air twice – once through the motor in the low engine (rpm) range and again through the 3.5T e-S/C – to boost the maximum torque and improve acceleration response at low and medium speeds.
Additional functions for the vehicles with this engine are a Sports+ driving mode, Launch Control, and a cluster that displays oil temperature, torque, and turbo pressure.
Besides the 3.5T, e-S/C engine, customers can also opt for the GV80 Coupe with a 2.5 turbo engine, which delivers 304 ps/422 Nm.
Other advanced driving technologies that enhance driving dynamics, especially on rough ground, are Preview Electronic Control Suspension which optimises control of the suspension by anticipating road conditions, and the second-generation Engine Mounting Control Unit detects road surfaces to reduce driving vibrations.
Additionally, crosswind stabilization assists drivers with high-speed driving during strong wind conditions, while Auto Terrain Mode utilizes AI to assess road conditions and automatically adjusts to the appropriate driving mode.
Genesis says it has achieved best-in-class tranquillity in the new model by incorporating noise-absorbing tyres, materials, and improving the soundproofing of the tailgate. Inside GV80 Coupe, the driver can replicate the sound of a large-displacement sports coupe’s exhaust with Active Sound Design and allow brake pedal responsiveness customization with Flex Brake feature.
Sophisticated ambience
The interior brings to life Genesis’ design ethos of the uniquely Korean concept of the ‘Beauty of White Space’, incorporating cutting-edge technology to create a sophisticated ambiance. A 27-inch-wide OLED display integrates the cluster and the AVN (Audio, Video, Navigation) screen, exemplifying the harmony in the combination of a high-tech device with luxurious details with its horizontal layout.
The seamless design extends to the centre fascia, and the touch-based ventilation/air-conditioning system offers ease of control. The redesigned crystal-like Shift By Wire controller enables a comfortable grip and adds a sense of luxury.
As would be expected, quality materials are used, with design enhancements adding to the GV80’s overall elegance. This can be seen in elements such as the horn pad cover which has the new Genesis emblem, 2-tone colour of the steering wheel, an improved pedal design, and crash pads and a centre console featuring leather, aluminium and real wood.
Genesis interior designers have also redesigned the wireless charging tray not only for convenience but also improved visibility of the smartphone while it’s charging.
To minimise the risk of slipping during operation, metal accents have been added on the brake and accelerator pedals. Additionally, the GV80 Coupe has optimized the layout of the engine compartment and chassis, and incorporated rear seat reclining functionality to provide a spacious interior.
“Today, we mark an important milestone in our journey to success,” said Graeme Russell, Chief Brand Officer of Genesis, during the unveiling of the new GV80 and GV80 Coupe in Korea. “As the boundaries of luxury continue to be redefined, Genesis believes that the GV80 and GV80 Coupe will cater to the ever-evolving needs of our discerning customers.”
