The latest BMW M2 (G87) is now available in the Malaysian market and authorised BMW dealers are accepting orders. BMW Malaysia is importing two versions – M2 and M2 with a Pro Package – priced (without insurance) at RM598,000 and RM642,800, respectively. While insurance premiums are not included, an Extended Warranty and BMW Service & Repair Inclusive are.
For this latest version of the coupe, there is a new, distinctive and unframed kidney grille design with horizontal slats. Complementing this are a striking apron and large, nearly square shaped air intakes to allow large volumes of cooling air to flow through.
The front wings, fronted by Adaptive LED headlights, are of aluminium to functionally reduce the weight. A pronounced power dome rises on the bonnet to make its high performance capabilities clear.
Innovative take on classic design
Besides widened side skirts and flared wheelarches that give an innovative take on classic BMW design, the M2 also has blue brake calipers and staggered Double-spoke style M light alloy wheels in 930 M Bicolour (19 inches in front, 20 inches at the rear).
The Pro Package is differentiated by the M Compound Brake in Red High-gloss and staggered Double-spoke style M light alloy wheels in 930 M Black.
Coming up behind the M2, a driver will notice the rear diffuser and hallmark M twin tailpipes that define the model.
Dimensionally, the new M2 is 214 mm shorter in overall length than the M4 Coupe, with a wheelbase that is shorter by 110 mm. However, the track widths are significantly greater than the new 2-Series Coupe giving the car enhanced stability.
Engine with racing roots
Power for the M2 comes from a 3-litre M TwinPower Turbo in-line 6-cylinder in-line engine with engineering roots in motor racing. The 460 bhp/550 Nm goes through an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission on the way to the rear wheels. No manual transmission is available (at least not at this time).
In standard form, the M2 will reach 100 km/h in a claimed 4.1 seconds after take-off and on to a top speed of 250 km/h. For extra top end speed, customers can add the M Driver’s Package which increases the maximum to 285 km/h.
This package can be included at the time of purchase or retrofitted at a later time at any authorised BMW dealership.
The chassis has been largely redeveloped from scratch. In addition to an increased track widths, the double-joint spring strut front axle and wishbone are now made of aluminium to decrease weight. The 5-link rear suspension is also said to be improved significantly from its predecessor.
BMW Curved Display
Like other recent new models, the M2 also has the BMW Curved Display. This is a broad display panel combining the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display and the 14.9-inch Control Display. The latest BMW Operating System 8 works together with BMW Live Cockpit Professional to provide infotainment.
As standard, the M2 comes with fully electric M Sport seats with side bolsters providing optimum lateral support when cornering at speed. Other standard sporting complements are the M leather steering wheel with shift paddles and red M Mode buttons, M Anthracite headliner, Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite M Interior Trim.
The M2 driver won’t need to look down at the instrument panel much as there is a Head-Up Display (HUD) projected on the glass ahead. Available for the first time in the M2, it has a M specific design and M font colours.
At the rear, there are two individually moulded seats and noticeably more legroom, thanks to the extended wheelbase (compared to the previous generation)
Boot space with the rear backrests up is 390 litres – generous by coupe standards – which can be expanded by folding down the 40:20:40 backrests.
20th BMW Art Car to be BMW M Hybrid V8, and it will be raced at Le Mans in 2024
