Over the years, Malaysian car-buyers have opted for hire-purchase (H-P) loan terms that are longer and longer. From a maximum of 3 years in the 1970s, loan repayment periods have extended up to 9 years. In fact, a recent survey found that 80% of people buying Proton or Perodua vehicles are on a 9-year loan (and would extend it if possible).
With such a long period of ownership, the original warranty would usually end after a few years. Some companies may not set a mileage limit, so you can enjoy warranty coverage for the full time period. Newcomers like Chery are even offering a 10-year/1 million km warranty for the engine.
Peugeot Malaysia is also extending its warranty for its locally-assembled models from today. Customers who purchase a new Peugeot vehicle from an authorised dealer are now entitled to a warranty of 5-years/150,000 km, whichever comes first.
Identical warranty conditions for extra years
This longer warranty consists of a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty with an additional 2 years extended warranty. Peugeot Malaysia notes that the warranty conditions for the additional 2 years are no different from the conditions for the first 3 years.
With some extended warranties, the additional years will see certain items being omitted. Vehicle owners who buy such extended warranties may not be fully aware and if they have to make a claim, they may be surprised to find that a particular item is not covered – even though it was covered in the original factory warranty.
Option to extend to 7 years
For those who have taken longer H-P loan periods, the 5-year warranty can also be extended with an optional 2-year coverage, taking it up to 7 years or 200,000 kms, whichever comes first. Additionally, customers have the flexibility to choose to purchase this extended warranty within the first 90 days to enjoy a promotional price or 90 days before their warranty ends at the normal price.
Similarly, Landtrek’s existing 3-year/100,000 km warranty can be extended by 2 years for a total of 5 years or 150,000 kms for a nominal fee of RM2,942, or by 4 years for a total of 7 years or 200,000 kms at RM5,148 within the first 90 days from purchase.
“Our customers are our top priority, and we want to ensure an enhanced worry-free ownership experience for all. We want to give our customers the flexibility to choose their warranty coverage based on their needs. We understand that purchasing a new car is a significant investment, and this extended coverage reflects our promise to build long-lasting relationships with our valued Peugeot customers in Malaysia,” said Jamie Francis Morais, Managing Director of Stellantis Malaysia, which manages the Peugeot brand.
