Once upon a time, the locally-assembled (or CKD) range of BMW models was limited to just the 3-Series and 5-Series (and for a while, the 7-Series as well). The Malaysian market wasn’t big enough to justify assembling a wider variety of models and furthermore, the carmaker itself was not directly involved in this aspect.
It was only in the early 2000s, when BMW Group Malaysia was established as a sales and marketing subsidiary of BMW AG, that things changed. The market size had grown considerably from the time the first model (the 320) was assembled in 1981, and more and more models began to be assembled locally at the facility within the Inokom complex in Kedah.
Today, the range, which includes electrified models, is very wide for a market of our size and most of its is for sale in this market only. The addition of new models is ongoing year after year and the latest is the X7 xDrive40i M Sport which has just begin rolling out.
Sports-oriented theme
Priced from RM718,800 (without insurance) with 5-year warranty and service package included, the new X7 xDrive40i M Sport features notable sports-oriented additions developed with the involvement of BMW’s high-performance division, BMW M.
These include the M Aerodynamics Package, along with door entry sills that feature the iconic M inscription, and 22-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in double spoke 913 M bicolour with mixed tyres. The BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille is also illuminated by LED fibreoptics for a strong visual aura.
BMW M and Individual items
Inside the SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle), there are also M-specific items such as the M leather-wrapped steering wheel, with ‘Fineline Black’ fine wood trim accented by high-gloss metal elements. The upholstery, available in Black or Tartufo, is from the Merino leather from BMW Individual.
The X7 xDrive40i M Sport also comes with the Driving Assistant Professional which includes Distance Control with Stop & Go function, along with the Steering and Lane Control Assistants. This allows semi-autonomous driving, reducing the workload for the driver on long journeys on the open highways.
6-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology
Propelling the SUV assertively is an in-line 6-cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology for enhanced performance and efficiency. An 8-Speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW’s xDrive system delivers power to all four wheels intelligently. The output of 380 bhp/540 Nm enables the X7 to go from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.8 seconds and top out at 250 km/h.
Locally-assembled BMW X1 now available, priced from RM259,800
