Following the launch of the BMW iX1, BMW Malaysia has now added the locally-assembled X1 to its compact SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) range. This is the third generation of the model which began global sales from late 2022.
For the Malaysian market, it is assembled at the BMW facility within the Inokom plant in Kedah, which allows it to be priced at RM259,800 (without insurance) with Extended Warranty and Service Package.
“Bringing the third generation of this beloved SAV to life and assembling it locally demonstrates not just our confidence in the Malaysian market, but also the strong support that we continue to receive from our loyal customers here,” said Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.
Increased dimensions
The version assembled locally is the X1 sDrive20i xLine which, in its new generation, has a bolder presence with increased dimensions. The new body size measures 4500 mm in length, 1845 mm in width, 1616 mm in height while the wheelbase has been extended by 22 mm to 2692 mm. These dimensions also provide a generous boot volume of 1,527 litres.
xLine treatment
The xLine treatment embellishes the large kidney grille with a Pearl Chrome frame and high-gloss Black slats, complemented by lines and surfaces that extend outwards in the shape of an X. The outer air intakes come with distinctive chrome trims, while the surrounding trim parts at the bottom are in Dark Grey for a rugged contrast. Unique to the new SAV, the front has slender wraparound adaptive LED headlights with distinctive new daytime running lights.
The generously flared square wheel arches convey the characteristic BMW X look with new 19-inch light alloy wheels in V-Spoke Style 867 Bicolour, complemented by a stylised Matte Aluminium underride protection panel along with xLine bumpers in the front and rear. Also included mirror covers in Glacier Silver and door sill panels with BMW designation in Matte Aluminium.
Driver-oriented cockpit
The increased dimensions and extended wheelbase mean extra space in the cabin but being a BMW, the cockpit is still very much driver-oriented. Now the driver gets the expansive BMW Curved Display which is a unified panel of a 10.25-inch instrument panel and central touchscreen 10.7-inch Control Display.
The digital BMW Live Cockpit Plus is standard and include navigation. It is managed by the BMW Operating System 8, an intelligent OS which integrates the new BMW iDrive functions and provides comprehensive connectivity for the latest SAV.
The floating armrest is an innovative feature that is new to the X1. It eliminates the central tunnel to free up space for storage in the centre console. The control panel including the gear selector, volume control and My Modes button are integrated into this armrest for ease of access and operation.
Other standard equipment include M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, 2-zone automatic air conditioning and front Sport seats in Sensatec. With the BMW Digital Key Plus and a compatible smartphone, it is possible unlock the vehicle hands-free while automatically activating the driver’s personal settings at the same time.
2-litre engine, 204 bhp/300 Nm
Powering the X1 is a 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 7-Speed Steptronic Dual Clutch Sport transmission. Its output of 204 bhp/300 Nm can take it to a top speed of 236 km/h after crossing the 100 km/h mark in a claimed 7.6 seconds. Fuel consumption, for those who are interested is claimed to be 13.9 kms/litre.
Besides all the usual driver-assistance systems (which include parking assistance), the X1 also has Evasion Assistant. This is an advanced feature that will assist the driver to steer around a hazard in certain situations.
