It’s been less than a year since the Chery Group’s premium SUV brand, JAECOO, has been launched in Malaysia (the first market in the ASEAN region). In that time, JAECOO Malaysia has not only launched new models but also started local assembly at the Chery Corporate Malaysia plant in Shah Alam, Selangor.
It currently has two models – the J7 and J7 PHEV and the OMODA C9 – with a third one to join the range sometime in the second quarter of 2025. This is the J8 which is the brand’s largest model so it would be the flagship SUV.
3 rows of seats
As the number suggests, the J8 is a bigger SUV than the J7. It has an overall length of
4.82 metres which would put it between a BMW X4 and X5, with its 1.93-metre width closer to the X4. The 320 mm length over the J7 allows more cabin space so it can accommodate more people with a third row of seats.
It will be offered in 2WD (5-seater) and AWD (6-seater) versions; the former estimated to be priced from RM195,000 and the latter from RM220,000. Going by past instances, the actual price could be lower as we have seen with the J7 PHEV.
2-litre turbocharged engine
The SUV has a 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (not hybrid) with 249 ps/385 Nm. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, its claimed consumption is 12.3 kms/litre. With a 65-litre fuel tank, that would give a range of at least 800 kms.
To keep the ride comfortable over all types of surfaces, the J8 has JAECOO’s Continuous Damping Control technology integrated into the AWD variant’s suspension system. Also available in the OMODA C9, this advanced system senses and makes adjustments to damping forces in milliseconds as the surface conditions change.
Premium features include NFC (Near-Field Communication) unlocking of doors with a smartphone, remote starting, 14-speaker Sony audio system with headrest speakers and multi-colour ambient lighting.
The J8 can be viewed at roadshows between now and May when it will be displayed at the Malaysia Auto Show. JAECOO dealers are not taking orders yet but you can let them know of your interest.
