JAECOO, Chery’s premium brand, is coming to Malaysia this year and of the two models that the young brand (born just one year ago) currently has, the J7 SUV will be making its official debut soon. In fact, Malaysia will be the first country in Southeast Asia to get the J7.
The model has been in the news since the beginning of 2024, and the public has been able to get a closer look at two roadshows. Until now, JAECOO Malaysia has been hinting that the price will be ‘below RM200,000’ (it’s not an EV so no duty exemption) but how far below? The company has now announced that the J7 with all-wheel drive will be priced at around RM160,000 and the version with 2-wheel drive will be around RM150,000.
Bookings accepted from April 10
Now that the estimated prices are revealed, those who are interested can make their decision and if they want to be among the first to own one, JAECOO dealers will accept orders from April 10, 2024 and test-drives will be available from next month. First deliveries are expected to start during the third quarter of the year.
The J7 is available with a 1.6-litre Kunpeng turbocharged 4-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine which produces a healthy 197 ps/290 Nm. The drivetrain has a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Like many of the modern AWD systems, the J7 has different modes which the driver can choose from to suit different surface conditions. Its advanced All Road Drive Intelligent System is a major contributor to stability, reacting with 0.1 second 4WD instant intervention. Moreover, the Integrated Power Brake system has high integration with related systems, and is said to provide faster braking with no performance decay.
Inside, seating space is quite generous and the 1865 mm body width helps, along with the ceiling height at 1680 mm (with a 1.1 sq. metre sunroof). The boot, which has a powered door, has 421 litres of volume with the rear seats in use and would be expandable when you fold them down. There are also additional storage compartments at the sides.
“The public’s consistent interest in anticipation of the J7, following two successful roadshows, has been very encouraging that we are so excited to begin accepting registrations of interest. We believe JAECOO Malaysia is bringing diversity to the SUVs market, especially with the J7 being a strong challenger in the C-segment SUV market, which consumers in Malaysia appreciate. Furthermore, our strategy to deliver a high level of technology advancements, in a premium manner and at a competitive price point addresses the current need in the market,” said JAECOO Malaysia President, Leo Chen.
