Want to ‘go electric’ but still concerned about being stuck when the battery on an EV runs out and there’s nowhere to recharge? A plug-in hybrid powertrain in a Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) gives you the electrification without the range anxiety.
Soon, JAECOO Malaysia will offer a PHEV version of the J7 that is already in the market with petrol engines only. The J7 PHEV has proven its long-range capability in a driving marathon which saw participation by representatives from 7 countries, including Malaysia.
During this 13-hour event in China, the premium SUV was able to travel over 1,300 kms on a single tank of fuel and without stopping to recharge. The route was on public riads and had traffic congestion during morning rush hour as well as open highways, so real-world conditions were experienced.
The range was achieved by combined use of the petrol engine, with the electric motor extending the range. On paper, the J7 PHEV has a pure electric range of 106 kms and JAECOO states a fuel consumption of 16.7 kms/litre (5.99 litres/100 kms).
“We understand that range anxiety is a concern among drivers when it comes to electric vehicles. This is why JAECOO placed the J7 PHEV in the hands of drivers from around the world to witness the unprecedented experience of travelling with confidence and peace of mind. Our strategy to introduce the JAECOO J7 PHEV is timely as the market demands the best of both worlds, engine performance and fuel efficiency,” said Chery Corporate Malaysia Executive Vice-President, Leo Chen.
According to Emily Lek, JAECOO Malaysia’ Vice-President, the J7 PHEV will be officially launched in Malaysia before the end of 2024. “Registrations of interest for the JAECOO J7 PHEV will begin at our preview next week. We anticipate to subsequently begin delivering the J7 PHEV by February 2025,” she said.
