JAECOO J7 fire in Sarawak due to improper dashcam installation

Responding to a thermal incident (aka fire) involving a JAECOO J7 in Sarawak, JAECOO Malaysia has carried out a thorough investigation. It shared the findings with its dealers, explaining that the cause was due to improper installation of a dashcam which was done by a third-party workshop not associated with JAECOO Malaysia’s network.

The company confirmed that there were no injuries or loss or life, and no damage to other property. The Sarawak Fire & Rescue Department responded to the incident and put out the fire.

Modifications or installation of any accessories should be done by an authorised service centre of the brand otherwise the warranty will be void.

While dashcams can be installed and powered using USB cables connected to an outlet on the dashboard, some owners prefer to have the unit connected to the car’s power supply directly because they don’t want the cable dangling down. Incidentally, JAECOO Malaysia provides a digital video recorder as standard with the J7.

If not done properly, such wiring can cause short-circuits and a fire may result. Therefore, if an owner wants to do anything involving electrical wiring, it should be done at an authorised service centre where the personnel will know how to connect the wiring properly and safely.

JAECOO Malaysia reminds owners that such work and any modifications done by unauthorised workshops can result in the vehicle warranty being cancelled. This is a condition that is normally stated in all vehicle warranties.
