It’s not only BMW that has Art Cars (though its collection must be the oldest), but some other carmakers too have created ‘art cars’ with their own models. The latest is the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) which has decorated its cars with renowned cultural graffiti.
The colourfully decorated cars can be seen around the 43rd ASEAN Summit venue and in tourist areas of Jakarta, Indonesia this week while the event is on. They are being shown with the aim of promoting the Korean city of Busan which has made a bid to host the 2030 World Expo.
For the project, HMG selected Hyundai Motor’s fully electric models – the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, and the Genesis Electrified G80 sedan. Also included is the Hyundai Stargazer X MPV, a variant model of last year’s ‘Indonesia Car of the Year’ which is made in the country. The models align with Busan’s vision for a sustainable World Expo.
To create 23 art cars for the ASEAN Summit, the Group collaborated with a leading Korean graffiti artist known as ‘JAY FLOW.’ He has been artistically active in Korea and abroad since the 2000s and has contributed to the globalization of what is called ‘K-graffiti’.
The art cars are wrapped in the writer’s bright, cheerful graffiti design on the front and sides of the vehicles with images and symbols representing Busan, such as the Gwangan Bridge and seagulls, along with the slogan ‘BUSAN is Ready’ to attract visitors to the city.
Besides having the art cars cruise around, HMG will also screen promotional videos highlighting Busan’s unique appeal and messages that support its bid to host the 2030 World Expo on more than 30 screens at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. Similar messages will also be shown on outdoor billboards in major areas of Indonesia’s capital city.
Besides Jakarta, HMG will also be having specially designed art cars in major cities around the world to create global support for Busan to be chosen as the venue of the 2030 World Expo.
