The Hyundai IONIQ 6 which has been making electric waves internationally is now also available in Malaysia, having been launched by Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) this evening.
Sharing flagship status with the EV9 SUV, the IONIQ 6 has impressed greatly that it has received three prestigious global awards.
The awards are the 2023 World Car of the Year, 2023 World Electric Vehicle of the Year and 2023 World Car Design of the Year. The awards join others in the World Car of Year event where the IONIQ 5 also won similar titles.
HSDM is importing two variants of the IONIQ 6 – the Max RWD, priced from RM289,888, and the Max AWD which is priced from RM319,888.
As the number of driven wheels indicates, the Max RWD is a single-motor 168 kW/350 Nm powertrain, while the Max AWD has one motor on each axle with total output of 239 kW/605 Nm.
Both are powered by a high-capacity 77.4 kW lithium-ion polymer batteries. The Max RWD is claimed to be able to go for 614 kms on a fully charged battery, while the Max AWD’s range is 95 kms less.
The IONIQ 6 is also a ‘powerbank on wheels’ as it has Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. When the car is parked, the electricity in its battery pack can be use to power external devices. This is useful for picnics or during emergencies when the electric power supply is cut.
Helping the IONIQ 6 go further is its slippery shape with a drag coefficient of 0.21 Cd. That’s one of the lowest in the world and it is also referred to as the ‘Streamliner’.
800V architecture allows the IONIQ 6 to be charged with a DC charging point of up to 350 kW. If this supply level is available, the charging time from 10% to 80% is claimed to be 18 minutes. With a 50 kW supply, it would be 73 minutes.
For owners who have an AC charging point with an 11 kW supply installed at home or in the office, recharging from 0% to 100% is estimate to take 7.1 hours so it would be an overnight procedure.
While the IONIQ 6 has a ‘retrofuturistic’ appearance, it shares the same advanced Parametric Pixel Lighting as the IONIQ 5. This is a trademark feature of the IONIQ EV range where the front pixelated. lights create a distinct visual signature.
The small cubic light clusters also appear in other areas such as the tail lamps, rear spoiler-mounted third brake lamp and even the steering wheel.
The ‘mindful cocoon’ interior features two seamlessly connected 12.3-inch displays screens, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless phone charging, eco-friendly materials and multi-colour ambient lighting.
“This is Hyundai’s third EV model in Malaysia and its most advanced one yet, further solidifying Hyundai as an eminent EV brand and one that is committed to advancing cutting-edge, zero-emissions mobility for a new generation of discerning customers,” said Sime Darby Motors MD of Retail and Distribution for Malaysia, Jeffrey Gan.
