When Malaysia’s first National Car was to be developed, Proton invited the public to suggest names for this historic model. Of the 102,823 entries received, it was ‘Saga’ proposed by the late Ismail Jaafar, a retired soldier, which was chosen.
Now, as the Malaysian carmaker begins a new journey into the era of electric vehicles, there is once again an invitation to the public to be involved in the brand name for the new Proton EV (expected to be launched ‘very soon’).
Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Proton and distributor of New Energy Vehicles, is running a contest where participants will decode and guess the brand name – and win a cash prize.
Announcing the contest, Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO-NET, said: “This contest isn’t just about naming a brand; it’s about inviting Malaysians to be integral participants in shaping the future of mobility. Proton is grateful for the support we received from Malaysians over the past 41 years and aims to embark on this EV journey with people at the forefront of its vision.”
“The Proton EV Brand Naming Contest signifies our readiness for the imminent launch of the first electric vehicle. As anticipation builds and excitement mounts, this contest serves as a beacon of Proton’s commitment to pioneering the future of automotive technology in Malaysia,” he added.
