Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E gets rally-inspired version

Mustang purists may not be happy but Ford is broadening the image of its iconic sportscar to now include an off-road character.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed recently, a rally-inspired of the Ford Mustang Mach-E was shown charging up the hill during the event.

It gave visitors the first look at an additional version of the electric Mustang – which is categorised as a SUV – which will go on sale in America and Europe later this year.

First time in 6 decades
To be called the Mustang Mach-E Rally, it’s the first time in its nearly 6-decade history that the sportscar has a model with the capability to continue when the highway ends.

“Mustang Mach-E took the freedom and fun of Mustang and made it free from emissions. Now with Mustang Mach-E Rally, we’re providing our customers the freedom to venture off the asphalt and beyond the beaten path,” said Darren Palmer, Vice-President, Electric Vehicle Programs, Ford Model e.

Mach-E GT powertrain?
The 5-seater SUV is likely to have the Mach-E GT specification. This would mean a 358 kW (480) ps/813 Nm dual-motor, all-wheel drive, battery-electric powertrain.

Specially-developed tyres distribute the extreme torque – available right from moving off – to the ground. There’s extra ground clearance for those times when the terrain gets very rough.

500-km range
Depending on the battery pack (up to 91 kWh), the range on a full charge is claimed to be up to 500 kms.

Recharging with up to 150 kW DC supply can add an average of 99 kms driving range within approximately 10 minutes. Charging from 10% to 80% capacity can be done within approximately 45 minutes.
