Ford RS200 and Escort Mk. 1 to be reborn and ‘remastered’

There are many Fords which have become legendary, especially in the motorsports world, and among them are the RS200 and Escort Mk. 1. While the Escort had an illustrious history in the World Rally Championship (WRC), the RS200 could only do one season as the Group B class it was in was abolished by the FIA due to a number of severe accidents (not only involving the Ford but also other rallycars).

Nevertheless, the RS200 remains a collectors’ model as the 200 units that had to be made to meet Group B homologation requirements then were sold off.

Brand licence agreement
Now the RS200 is being ‘remastered’ in a brand licence agreement between Ford Motor Company and UK-based Boreham Motorworks which specialises in the design, manufacture, and distribution of iconic cars.

The original Ford RS200 developed as a Group B rallycar in the World Rally Championship during the 1980s. Unfortunately, after one season, it could no longer be run as the FIA decided to abolish Group B.

With the agreement, Boreham Motorworks will produce significant and iconic Ford road, race, and rallycars, starting with the RS200. This will be an entirely new, ground-up build of the rallycar which will be road-legal.

The ‘dogbone’ Escort too
Additionally, Boreham Motorworks will also create blueprint-accurate, period-sympathetic models with continuation VIN numbers. To number at least 5 models, these will start with the Mk. 1 Escort (nicknamed the ‘dogbone’ Escort because of its grille design) that was produced in the late 1960s and became highly successful in motorsports, both on track and in rallies.

The company will remaster these icons in very limited numbers, while providing customers an exclusive, invitation-only membership to The Boreham High Performance Club, for immersing likeminded individuals in spectacular driving experiences globally.

The Escort Mk.1 produced between 1967 and 1975.

“From the first time we met with Boreham Motorworks and the DRVN team, it was clear that they had an exciting vision for how to bring some of our most iconic historical nameplates to life for the modern er,” said Will Ford, General Manager, Ford Performance Motorsports. “It will be exciting to see this relationship flourish and to see how Boreham Motorworks brings the vision to life at a time when there is so much passion from enthusiasts for great experiences.”

The Boreham Motorworks series comes at an exciting time as Ford Performance Motorsports expands its racing programs around the world including initiatives such as the Mustang GT3 at Le Mans, a new Raptor for the Dakar Rally in 2025, and Ford’s return to Formula 1.

Could this all be due to encouragement from Jim Farley, CEO & President of Ford Motor Company, who is a motorsports enthusiast and racing driver?
