First Tesla V4 Supercharger in Southeast Asia is in Malaysia

Tesla has introduced the V4 Supercharger station to Southeast Asia and the first one has opened at two locations in Malaysia. These are at the IOI City Mall and IOI Mall Puchong located in Putrajaya and Selangor, respectively.

Until now, the Superchargers installed in Malaysia (since Tesla arrived in July 2023) have been the V3 type which have been available since 2019, while the V4 type was first introduced in North America in early 2023.

The most obvious difference between the V3 and V4 is that the V3 has a large vertical ‘hole’ in its design whereas the V4 is a solid panel. The V4 is also 260 mm taller but 127 mm narrower and has a black and white theme as opposed to the red and white of the V3 Supercharger.

The V4 cable is 3 metres long – one whole metre more than the one on the V3 – which should add to convenience when connecting to the car. However, at this time, the latest Supercharger supports a DC power supply of only up to 250 kW per vehicle, which is similar to the rating for the V3.

It is, however, believed to be ready to handle power supplies up to 350 kW later on, and has been ‘future-proofed’ for other features. When using the 230 kW supply, a Model 3 Long Range can recharge up to 282 kms in 15 minutes.

The Superchargers are designed and made by Tesla, ensuring that recharging is at its best with the brand’s models. Having had a head-start on building its charging network since 2012, it’s not surprising that Tesla has the largest network globally – certainly leading with DC fast-chargers. Depending on the location, the DC power supply is either 72 kW, 100 kW, 150 kW or 250 kW.

The Tesla charger network is supplemented by Destination Chargers at many sites. Destination Chargers are like the wallboxes that can be installed at home (which Tesla also offers), and use AC power supply. Charging speeds are slower and compared to a Supercharger which can ‘fill’ up to 120 kms of range in 5 minutes, the Destination Charger provides 50 – 70 kms of range in an hour.

Payments are automatically processed via the Tesla App which every owner must have. The current rate in Malaysia is RM1.25/kWh but for the Destination Chargers, complimentary charging is provided to Tesla owners.
