The wave of Chinese models continues in 2025 and Denza, a BYD brand, will soon make its entry into the Malaysian market with an official launch on February 20.
The first model will be the D9, a fully-electric MPV. Slightly larger (5250 mm in length) than the market leader Toyota Alphard, the D9 is a 7-seater (2-2-3) premium model.
FWD and AWD
Available in 2 versions with 3 colour choices, the output of the 8-in-1 FWD powertrain is 230 kW/360 Nm with electric energy provided by a 103.36 kWh Blade battery pack developed and made by BYD. The AWD version, with an additional motor at the rear axle, has a total 275 kW/470 Nm output, with the same capacity for the battery pack.
The D9 FWD has a claimed range up to 600 kms, while the AWD version can go ùp to 580 kms. Charging time from 30% to 80% can be within 30 minutes with a DC power supply up to 166 kW.
Prices will be revealed at the launch and being a premium product, expect them to be over RM200,000 though less than an Alphard. While there is no point looking at Singapore prices which are ridiculously high due to their CoE, the Thai prices might give a clue to the price levels in Malaysia. The D9 in Thailand starts at 2 million Thai baht and goes up to 2.7 million baht which, converted at today’s rates, would be about RM262,000 to RM360,000.
About Denza
Denza is a brand in the BYD portfolio which originally started as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz in 2010. In September 2024, Mercedes-Benz left the partnership so the Shenzhen Denza New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd, as the company is known, has become fully owned by BYD. To date, Denza has produced over 200,000 vehicles for various segments in China, and entered Southeast Asia at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show.
For the Malaysian market, BYD will have a slightly different arrangement for the Denza brand where Sime Motors will not be the distributor, unlike for the BYD brand. BYD Malaysia will manage the distribution itself but due to the requirement for APs to bring in vehicles, Sime Darby Auto Imports (an AP-holder) will be the official importer.
BYD Malaysia will appoint its own dealers and from what we have seen of early publicity of Denza, there will be at least 7 outlets handling the brand when it is launched, with one each in Melaka, Penang and Johor. Not surprisingly, Sime Motors is also among the dealers and has set up a separate retail unit called Denza Sime Motors. Incidentally, Sime Motors also represents Denza and BYD in Singapore.
