Shell Recharge, the energy company’s electric vehicle charging service at stations and various public locations, has announced its plan to set up an EV charging hub in Genting Highlands by early 2024. The hub, to be located at Resorts World Genting, will be part of the Shell Recharge EV network of 136 charging points which are in key cities and along highways in Peninsular Malaysia, connecting Singapore, Malaysia to Thailand.
The Shell Recharge EV network is a joint initiative by Shell and Porsche Asia Pacific which began in 2021. The primary network is along the North-South Expressway in Malaysia and then highways in Thailand, making it the longest cross-country high-performance charging (HPC) infrastructure EV network in Southeast Asia.
“With the addition of 10 charging bays at the hilltop of Resorts World Genting, we continue to make headway towards a continued commitment of enabling a net-zero transport solution in Malaysia. Soon, EV owners from all over the country and beyond will be able to drive their way up to this premier resort without having range anxiety, experiencing a worry-free journey with our Shell Recharge network,” said Seow Lee Ming, General Manager of Shell Mobility, Malaysia, at a ceremony in Genting Highlands this morning.
The EV charging station will have 10 charging bays, of which 4 will offer ultra-fast 360 kW DC supply, enabling EVs to be recharged in a shorter time. With a Porsche Taycan, just 20 minutes can ‘refill’ the battery pack from 5% to 80% and it would take less time if less recharging is needed.
The other 6 bays will be 22 kW AC chargers which have a slower rate of recharging that is dependent on the EV’s input capability. Those who are going up to the hilltop to spend time in the casino probably won’t be too concerned about the longer time. All the chargers will have CCS Type 2 charging connectors, which is common in most EVs today.
“Our partnership with Shell Recharge is a testament to our commitment to enabling long-distance, cross-border travel in an EV, connecting three countries – Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. We are delighted to further elevate seamless charging experience for our Porsche Taycan owners, as well as other Porsche electric vehicle models on the horizon, with this new high-performance Shell Recharge 360kW DC charging hub in Resorts World Genting,” said Christopher Hunter, CEO of Sime Darby Auto Performance, which represents Porsche in Malaysia.
Shell Recharge is transitioning to the kilowatt-hour (kWh) pricing mechanism. Since November 1, customers have been charged with the new kWh rates at AC chargers nationwide. For DC chargers, the change will start from December 15, 2023.
The Shell Recharge model maintains a reservation fee and will implement an idle charge across different charging types to prioritise the smart parking bays for EV owners. For convenience, motorists can reserve parking bay in advance via Shell’s ParkEasy app [App Store | Google Play Store] which includes guidance to locate available bays.
