Chery reported that following its last shipment of vehicles overseas in December, the total volume of exports for 2023 was 937,148 units. With this 21.1% increase over the previous year, Chery remained as China’s top passenger car exporter for a 21st consecutive year.
With continuous increases each month, the total volume of sales for 2023 was 1,881,316 vehicles, representing a year-on-year growth of 52.6%.
The 1.9 million vehicles delivered add to Chery’s customer base which has now exceeded 13 million, with some 3.35 million in markets outside China, including Malaysia.
Rapid export growth
Besides Chery, other Chinese carmakers have also seen substantial growth in export sales over the past year, especially with growing demand for electrified (or New Energy, as they are referred to in China) vehicles. The push to grow their export business has taken China past Japan as the top vehicle exporting nation in the world since the beginning of 2023.
Using own car-carriers
This increase in shipments has led some of the larger carmakers to have their own car-carriers, known as ro-ro (roll on, roll off) which can transport thousands of vehicles. Early last month, the first 7,000 standard vehicle car capacity professional ro-ro ship operated by a Chinese background shipowner began its first voyage from the port of Shanghai.
Known as the ‘Jiuyang Blossom’, it is the first of more such vessels that will be available to Chinese carmakers to ship their vehicles around the world. Having their own transporters will not only reduce shipping costs but also allow more flexibility on routes and schedules as they will not have to share the vessel with other customers.
