Chery Auto Group enters the Fortune Global 500

Chery, which is China’s top passenger car exporter, has gone ‘big time’ with a ranking in the Fortune Global 500 list this month. With revenues of US$39.0917 billion, it has not just entered (as the Chery Holding Group) the list at the bottom but jumped right to 385th position.

Presence in over 80 countries and regions
The Chery Auto Group began as the Chery Automobile Company founded by government of Wuhu city in Anhui province in 1997.

Since then, it has rapidly grown to have a brand presence in over 80 countries and regions.

It has produced over 14.2 million units in 27 years and in the first half of 2024, achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 1.1 million vehicle sales. This was a 48.4% increase year-on-year. In 2023, one in every three Chinese passenger cars exported overseas was a Chery.

Among first Chinese vehicle brands in Malaysia
Chery was among the first Chinese passenger vehicle brands to enter the Malaysia market in the 2000s. However, the business at that time was handled by a local company.

Over a year ago (May 2023), the automaker returned to the market, this time with its own subsidiary which is directly involved in all aspects of the business.

Chery OMODA E5 EV
OMODA E5 is currently the only fully electric model in the local range.

Its model line started off with the Tiggo 8 PRO and OMODA 5 last year and this year, it launched the OMODA E5 EV and Tiggo 7 PRO.

A third model is also said to be planned for 2024 and will be at the lower end as it is promoted as ‘My First Chery‘ to bring Malaysians into the Chery family.
