Mention ‘TYPE R’ and it will start the adrenalin pumping in driving enthusiasts and Honda fans. This is the version with the highest performance of models such as the Integra, NSX and Civic since 1992. Each model with the TYPE R badge has had performance-boosting technologies developed from Honda’s decades of motorsports participation, including Formula 1.
Now Casio has come out with a watch in its EDIFICE line based on the brand concept of ‘Speed and Intelligence’ which is a worthy tribute to the Honda TYPE R cars. Released this month, the ECB-2200HTR timepiece is a collaboration model with the carmaker and incorporates many elements associated with TYPE R cars.
Meticulous attention has been paid to colour, material, and finish. For example, authentic ‘Championship White’ Honda paint is used to paint the dial ring, this colour being exclusive to TYPE R models.
The red ‘H’ badge is reproduced on the watch face with a 3-dimensional form and elegant curves. This iconic badge has been used since Honda’s first win with the RA272 in the 1965 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix.
In addition, the white genuine leather band is printed with the model codes of TYPE R cars — from the NSX NA1 that debuted in 1992 to the Integra and the latest Civic FL5. The metal band loop and case back are engraved with TYPE R logos, the deployment buckle with a ‘Honda’ logo, and the stopwatch timer button with an ‘R’ mark.
The deployment buckle is also used to fasten the band, providing an even more comfortable fit. Its underside has a layer of Alcantara, a material also used in TYPE R cars. This synthetic textile has a soft, suede-like feel and is noted for its durability. Red stitching also mimics the interiors of the cars.
The ECB-2200HTR is equipped with Casio’s Mobile Link which allows pairing with a smartphone via Bluetooth. When paired, the watch can have automatic time correction, as well as make it easy to set world time and other functions.
With the Tough Solar charging system, light (even weak light) is converted by 6 solar cells to energy to power the watch. The energy is stored in a large-capacity battery which can power multiple power-hungry functions. A double LED light illuminates both the LCD and dial for easy reading in even dark conditions.
