With their mainstream products now invading many global markets, Chinese carmakers are beginning to look at niche markets like the supercar segment. Like the established western carmakers, they are using these supercars – initially shown as concept cars – to enhance their image of technological advancement and capabilities.
BYD, now leading the global players with its New Energy Vehicles, has unveiled a supercar concept from its high-end premium brand, Fang Cheng Bao. The supercar, known as the Super 9, will make its public debut next week at the annual Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, also known as Auto China 2024.
The Super 9 (likely to be known as Bao 9 when it goes on sale) is a fully electric supercar with a design that you would find from European studios. It has two separately enclosed spaces for the driver and passenger who enter and exit with butterfly-style doors.
The lightweight convertible supercar with a carbonfibre monocoque has been designed by a team led by Wolfgang Egger, formerly involved in design work at Audi and Lamborghini as well as some other carmakers.
