BYD recall does not affect vehicles sold in Malaysia

Sime Darby Motors says that the recall announced by BYD, one of the brands it represents in Malaysia, does not apply to the vehicles sold in Malaysia although the models – the Dolphin and Yuan Plus (ATTO 3) – are sold here.

“As the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, Sime Darby Motors would like to reassure our valued customers that the BYD models sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recent recall announcement by BYD in China as it is limited exclusively to vehicles sold in the China market.

97,000 units recalled in China
BYD recently informed Chinese authorities that it is recalling around 97,000 units of its EVs for a manufacturing fault. This fault relates to a steering control which could lead to a fire starting in the vehicle. The automaker has a fix for the fault and dealers will install this fix on the affected vehicles.

ATTO 3 is the name used outside China for the Yuan Plus, one of the affected models.

The models affected are the Dolphin and Yuan Plus (sold as ATTO 3 outside China). Both are very popular models in BYD’s range and exported globally. However, as stated by Sime Darby Motors, the vehicles affected were all sold within China.

Fire risks are one of the dangers often associated with EVs due to their battery packs which can go into what is known as thermal runaway due to unusual conditions. They then rapidly heat up to very high temperatures and catch fire. However, the fault in the EVs may not necessarily be directly related to the battery pack and could be some other area.

BYD Blade Battery
BYD’s Blade Battery Packs have a design and special features which the automaker says resolve issues in battery safety while also redefining safety standards for the entire industry. Their resistance to catching fire has been proven in extreme tests such as the nail penetration test.

The Blade Battery developed by BYD. The singular cells are arranged together in an array, making for a more optimized battery pack structure. This allows space utilization of the battery pack to be increased by over 50% compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries.

In the past few years, many EV manufacturers have been pushing for greater cruising range. When the range becomes the prime factor to consider, increasing energy density is one approach being used and this pursuit has left to safety considerations being lessened, in the company’s view.”

“BYD’s Blade Battery aims to bring battery safety back to the forefront, a redirection from the industry’s tenuous focus on this crucial aspect,” the automaker says.
