BMW’s most powerful production model to date with 748 bhp/1,000 Nm, set a new record for hybrid electric SUVs at Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, USA. During the officially certified run up the 19.99-km course with 150 turns, the XM Label Red reached the summit in 10 minutes 48.6 seconds.
The record time is listed for the hillclimb route but is not considered an event record because it was not done during the official event held in June. On that earlier attempt, the SUV crashed and hit a tree. However, it is now possible for manufacturers to carry out runs whenever they want to do so, and have times officially certified.
Previous record-holders for SUVs set during the annual hillclimb event have included a Bentley Bentayga in 2018 (10 minutes 49.9 seconds) and Lamborghini Urus Performante in 2022 (10 minutes 32.06 seconds). The XM Label’s achievement is all the more impressive considering that it is 570 kgs heavier than the Lamborghini.
The XM Label Red was launched in Malaysia in May this year with a price of RM1.62 million. Its hybrid electric drivetrain is derived from BMW’s newest endurance racing car, the BMW M Hybrid V8.
20th BMW Art Car to be BMW M Hybrid V8, and it will be raced at Le Mans in 2024
