The Renault Scenic originally began as a variant of the Megane in 1996, with the name being an acronym of the 1991 Safety Concept Embodied in a New Innovative Car. It was a significant model when it was launched, having introduced the concept of the Multi Purpose Vehicle – now commonly referred to as MPV.
Like the minivan had done in America in the 1980s, the Scenic created a new segment in Europe and other markets. The MPV trend started a bit earlier than the SUV trend which can be traced to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V of the mid-1990s. While SUVs appealed to those who wanted a more versatile and ‘rugged’ alternative to the passenger car, the MPV was family-oriented with more space and also versatility.
Over 27 years, the Scenic evolved as market needs changed and now, as electrification begins, Renault has made the model fully electric in its new generation. It is a product in the Renaulution strategic plan and embodies the Group’s new sustainability strategy and the three pillars that strategy stands on: the environment, safety and inclusion.
The Scenic E-Tech continues its role as the primary car for the household, for long journeys during weekends and for holiday motoring. Now the motoring becomes something different as it is fully electric and emission-free. Renault offers the Scenic E-Tech with a choice of two powertrains. The motors have outputs of 125 kW (170 ps) and 160 kW (220 ps) with battery capacities of 60 kWh and 87 kWh, and a range of up to 620 kms.
Built on the CMF-EV platform developed by the Alliance, the new Scenic E-Tech has a footprint that is small relative to its category, but its roominess is said to be class-leading. The 2.78-metre long wheelbase and flat room enhance the spacious feel within. There is plenty of room for passengers (including a 278 mm knee radius at the back) and for luggage in the 545-litre boot.
“In 1996, Scenic was new and reinvented the rules and modernised family cars. The All-new Scenic E-Tech electric follows this path. It’s an all-rounder electric car, designed with sustainability at the core, capable of travelling long distances. It offers outstanding interior space while remaining compact, brightness, comfort and state-of-the-art connectivity,” said Fabrice Cambolive, CEO for the Renault brand.
