After the closure of the 52-year old Goodyear Malaysia factory in Selangor last year, another tyre factory in Malaysia will stop manufacturing operations. This is the Continental Tyre factory in Alor Setar, Kedah which will shut down at the end of 2025.
The factory, which was originally opened in 1979 and acquired by Continental in 2012, produces passenger car and light truck tyres for the Asia Pacific Market, as well as motorcycle tyres..

According to Continental Malaysia, the decision to close the Alor Setar plant is to safeguard the company’s competitiveness, following a comprehensive business review and business performance in the APAC region. Adapting to changing customer demand, the company seeks to optimise its local product portfolio and its manufacturing footprint, its statement today said.
Support for employees
There are 950 employees currently working at the facility situated in Mergong on the western side of the state capital. Continental Malaysia will prioritise support for these employees by providing assistance and support such as career counselling as well as exploring potential employment opportunities inside and outside of the company.
Declaring that Malaysia continues to be a key market for Continental in the Asia-Pacific region, the company reaffirms its commitment to its customers and partners in Malaysia, emphasising that long-term relationships and trust continue to be at the heart of its business in the country.
Besides Malaysia, Continental also has tyre manufacturing factories in China), Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka.
