The BYD ATTO 3 was among the early EV models in the Malaysian market, having been launched by BYD and BYD Sime Motors in December 2022. Although many new EVs began appearing in the months that followed, the ATTO 3 remained a popular choice for many who were keen on ‘going electric’ for their mobility.
Throughout 2023 and 2024, the BYD ATTO 3 sold in numbers large enough to make it No.1 in the EV market in Malaysia. Along with the popularity of other models such as the Dolphin, Seal, M6 and Sealion 7, BYD also became the leading EV brand in the market.
With each passing month, the reliability of the ATTO 3 is further confirmed as owners continue to enjoy their EV without problems. Data from actual usage over the past 2 years has shown that some owners of the ATTO 3 have travelled as much as 80,000 kms during that period, with no problems experienced.
In fact, one owner (among the earliest) said that he has driven his ATTO 3 as much as 100,000 kms. He is not only impressed by the trouble-free ownership experience but has also found that the maintenance cost is lower than for a car with a petrol engine.
Blade Battery technology
A major contributor to the growing reputation for reliability is the Blade battery with technology, developed by BYD. With 30 years of experience in developing and manufacturing batteries, BYD developed the Blade battery for EVs with the highest standards of safety, reliability and longevity.
When developing the Blade battery, BYD was determined to resolve safety issues and as a result of its pioneering efforts, battery safety standards have been redefined for the entire industry. With the Blade battery, BYD has brought battery safety to the forefront.

Extreme tests such as the nail penetration test have confirmed the safety aspects. In this test, a nail is driven through the centre of the battery cell until it penetrates to the other side, causing a short circuit inside the battery cell. The short-circuit would usually cause thermal runaway which is a condition that can start a fire as the battery heats up excessively. However, this does not happen with a Blade battery.
Through this testing, BYD’s Blade Battery – which uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry – has demonstrated higher safety standards compared to Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide and Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium Oxide batteries.
The singular cells are arranged together in an array and then inserted into a battery pack, hence the ‘Blade’ name. Due to its optimized battery pack structure, the space utilization of the battery pack is increased by over 50% compared to conventional LFP block batteries.
The reliability and durability of the Blade battery has been confirmed in many markets where BYD EVs are sold. In Malaysia, BYD Sime Motors says that the battery warranty claim rate is lower than 0.3%, reflecting the battery’s exceptional reliability.
As for longevity, BYD’s own testing has shown that the Blade battery BYD has a lifespan of more than 3,000 complete charge cycles. That’s the equivalent of driving an EV 1.2 million kms using the same battery.
Nevertheless, for added peace of mind, the ATTO 3 comes with a comprehensive warranty package of 8 years or 160,000 kms for the Blade battery, as well as 8 years or 150,000 kms for the electric drive unit and 6 years or 150,000 kms for the rest of the vehicle.
New for 2025
This year, the ATTO 3 ULTRA has been updated with additional features for comfort and convenience, as well as a new rim design that further strengthens its visual presence on the road.
One of the new features is the Digital Key which uses NFC (Near-Field Communication) on a compatible smartphone (or tablet) to unlock and start the vehicle. The Digital Key, previously only offered in expensive luxury models, works just like a remote control unit. Instead of pressing a button, all that is needed is to tap the phone on a specific area near the door. A secure encrypted signal will be sent to the vehicle’s control unit to unlock the door. At the same time, the vehicle will also be readied to be started by the driver.
As not all smartphones may have the NFC capability, BYD also provides a Bluetooth Key function which can provide the same convenience. This allows access through the BYD app even if there is no internet connection, making it available anywhere and at all times.
Front passengers will also enjoy a more comfortable journey in the new ATTO 3 ULTRA. The seats now come with ventilation for a cooler experience, certainly welcome in our hot climate.
The bold, all-black interior with the unique 15.6-inch centre display that can be rotated to portrait or landscape orientation offers excellent functionality. In the latest ATTO 3 ULTRA, the seats now have bright yellow contrast stitching in place of the previous red, adding a sportier touch.
The new design for the lightweight aluminium alloy rims complement the sleek aerodynamic form of the ATTO 3 ULTRA. They are fitted with 235/50R18 tyres that are designed with low rolling resistance to extend cruising range.
Fully electric drivetrain
The ATTO 3 ULTRA has a fully electric drivetrain with a front-mounted motor producing 150 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque. With ULTRA version having a 60.48 kWh Blade battery, it is possible to travel up to 420 kms (WLTP range).
Recharging the Blade battery from 10% to 80% can be done within 40 minutes with a DC fast-charger having an 88 kW supply. With an AC charger (which is usually the type for home chargers), recharging from 0% to 100% can be done within 9 hours and 42 minutes with a power supply of up to 7 kW.
Now more affordable
The ATTO 3 ULTRA now comes with a more affordable price of RM123,800 (excluding insurance and other charges). Customers can choose from three exterior body colours – Ski White, Harbour Grey and Cosmos Black, all of which the black interior is well harmonised with.
Special launch package
The first 1,000 customers of the ATTO 3 ULTRA can enjoy an exclusive ‘early bird’ package which offers more savings and long-term benefits, as well as extra items to make ownership of the EV more enjoyable.
The package offers a cash rebate of RM5,000 and includes an 8-year service package worth RM4,888. The new owners also get the following with compliments of BYD Sime Motors – a 7 kW Wall Charger (worth RM3,699); V2L Adaptor for charging external devices and equipment (worth RM988); Type 2 Charging Cable (worth RM 1,796); and Unlimited Internet connectivity for the first 2 years.
They can also save money over the long-term by including service packages at the time of purchase. These packages include all the required parts and fluids at each scheduled service. They are available for 3, 6 or 8 years with prices starting from RM1,688. The advantage of having such packages is that they ‘lock in’ maintenance costs at today’s rates so the owner does not have to pay more if the costs increase later on.
Those who want more coverage can opt for the Service Plus packages. These offer extra benefits such as tyre rotation, alignment and balancing, along with an annual 12V battery replacement. Replacement of brake pads and discs are also included in the Service Plus Packages which are available for periods of 6 or 8 years.
