After a slow start to the new year (not unusual after the surge in December), Proton sales increased by 13.2% in the second month of 2025 as buyers began shopping again. A total volume of 11,232 units was reported by the Malaysian automaker’s various units, including its international division. This would account for a market share of 17.2 % on a forecast of Toyota Industry Volume of new vehicle sales of 65,276 units.
Commenting on the sales results, Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar, said: “Sales for PROTON recovered in February after a slow start to 2025. There is some lingering uncertainty regarding buyer liquidity but for now, our volumes are on an upward trend. Therefore, as a whole, Proton is continuing to chase sales volumes for our range of ICE (models with just combustion engines) products while setting the pace in the EV market. The Proton e.MAS 7 has proven to be an early success so our challenge now is to keep it in the spotlight while aggressively planning for our other model introductions later this year.”
Proton’s EV goes overseas
The e.MAS 7. Proton’s first EV launched in December 2024, has already appeared in some overseas markets. 50 units were shipped to Nepal last month ahead of the model’s future launch while a small number of units have also been sent to Singapore and Trinidad & Tobago for evaluation purposes.
On the home market, the e.MAS 7 has been a hit right from the start, with more than 4,500 bookings received to date. Many were quick to book a unit as Proton is offering a special price to the first 6,000 pioneers besides an ‘early bird’ package.
“This proves that an increasing number of Malaysians are willing to make the switch to electric vehicles with Proton, provided the overall package meets their expectations,” observed Encik Roslan. While the number of EVs sold is still small, the e.MAS 7 has been at the top of the sales chart for its segment.
3 segment leaders
Meanwhile, Proton’s ICE models continue to command strong sales, with 3 models having a lead in their respective segments after the first two months of 2025. With 2,340 units delivered, the S70 remains the best-selling C-segment sedan in Malaysia. The X50 continues to dominate the SUV B-segment with a cumulative total of 3,259 units, while the X90 tops the D-segment for SUVs with 1,824 units delivered until the end of February.

Growth in Egyptian sales
However, it is still the evergreen Saga that sells the most and in February alone, 5,024 units were delivered. Additional volume will now come from Egypt where the model is now being assembled at the Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories facility in Egypt.
The production, to be up to 40,000 units annually, will not only be for the Egyptian market but also for other markets in North Africa and the Middle East. This will help Proton reach its target of 10% of total sales volume being from exports.
