The EV market in Malaysia started off the new year with a newcomer zooming to the top of the chart – the Proton e.MAS 7. It’s not surprising though as over 2,500 orders for Proton’s first EV were received within the first 11 days after launch.
25% of EVs delivered in January
During January, the first 421 buyers received their e.MAS 7, according to JPJ data. It was the only model with over 400 units delivered as the next closest, the BYD Sealion 7, was shown as having 151 units delivered. The e.MAS 7 numbers accounted for 25% of the 1,691 EVs registered in January.
The strong and positive response to the e.MAS 7 could be a reflection of Malaysians being happy to now have an EV from their own national brand – and it won’t be the only one this year. Next year, Proton will also be assembling EVs at its new plant in Tg. Malim, Perak which is now under construction.
Save RM14,000 and get earlier delivery
The e.MAS 7 is available in two versions – Prime and Premium. However, those who choose a Premium have a longer wait of up to 2 months at this time whereas the lower-priced Prime version can be delivered within 2 – 3 weeks (depending on the loan approval process).
At RM109,800, the Prime is RM14,000 less than the Premium but you get much of the same vehicle. There is the same spaciousness and premium cabin, and the powertrains are identical in performance. Importantly, Prime owners do not get reduced safety features, unlike some companies which omit certain safety systems in their lower-priced variants. ASEAN NCAP tested the e.MAS7 and gave it the maximum rating of 5 stars.
Dedicated sales and service network
As the e.MAS 7 is a different type of vehicle from any model that Proton has sold before, there is a separate network of dealers to handle the models under the e.MAS brand. The dedicated network will number 37 outlets by the end of 2025, with 30 having started operations by the end of 2024.
