The Galant was a popular midsized model sold in many countries. It competed in the same segment as the Mazda Capella, Datsun Bluebird, Toyota Corona and Honda Accord. In Malaysia, it was present right from the first generation in the early 1970s and the sedan was also assembled locally.
While the Mitsubishi Division of Cycle & Carriage handled the locally-assembled models (Lancer, Galant, Tredia), another company called United Cycle handled the CBU (completely built-up models) imported from Japan. These were models such as the Colt, Cordia, Starion, and Galants with larger engines.
The Galants with larger engines were the 2-litre versions and included the Galant Coupe 2000 GSR which is pictured in the advertisement. This was a 2-door coupe version which was also known as the Sapporo in some markets and Chrysler also took the model and put its Dodge and Plymouth badges on it to sell in the USA.
The Galant Coupe 2000 GSR’s styling was typical of the bold designs of the 1980s that Mitsubishi Motors was noted for. It was that period that the automaker was probably at its peak, with sporty models and a full range of turbocharged engines.
The Galant Coupe 2000 GSR was priced at RM28,000 in the early 1980s, which was a bit expensive then. Its styling appealed to some but not to all so it didn’t sell in big numbers and it would be hard to find an example today.
