While most people know pick-up trucks to have high ground clearances and stand taller so they can travel over rough terrain or through floods, there are also trucks that are low to the ground. Available in some markets, especially Thailand, these are known as Low-Rider trucks and have similar functionality.
The low-rider trucks are more commonly used in sub-urban and urban areas where there are better roads, and because of their lower ride height, loading is easier. For all intents and purposes, other than being lower, the low-rider trucks are the same as the regular trucks.

Isuzu Malaysia plans to introduce such trucks soon with the D-MAX Low-Ride 4×2 pick-up truck. Sharing similar specifications as the proven base Isuzu D-MAX 1.9-litre Single Cab, there are a few enhancements to differentiate it from the regulat D-MAX.
Spacious cabin for 5 persons
The cabin is spacious and accommodates 5 persons. Even if not having many people to carry, the space available is useful to safely keep tools or other valuable equipment. It comes with fabric seats, a single-DIN Bluetooth-ready entertainment system, tilt and telescopic adjustment for the steering column, central locking and electronically-adjustable door mirrors.
Proven 1.9-litre turbodiesel engine
The D-Max Low-Ride will be available exclusively with the exceptionally-capable 1.9-litre RZ4E-TC engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox which is proven to give lower ownership and running costs. The engine recently proved its fuel economy by travelling 2,000 kms on a single tank – earning a listing in the Malaysia Book of Records.
ASEAN NCAP 5-star safety
Safety is never overlooked by Isuzu, even though this is a light commercial vehicle. The occupants deserve protection as much as for those in passenger cars. Thus the D-MAX Low-Ride comes with similar active safety systems as passenger cars as well as Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control which would be useful if driving in the countryside.
There are also airbags Brake Override System, Emergency Stop Signals, Follow-Me-Home lights and reverse sensors as standard. ASEAN NCAP has tested the D-MAX and it has received the full 5-star rating, making it one of the safest trucks in its class.
“As a world leader in the manufacture of commercial vehicles, Isuzu continues to offer vehicles that bring good value and low running costs to its owners. The new Isuzu D-MAX Low-Ride is no Exception. Its uncomplicated yet robust design, versatile configuration and efficient powertrain ensure that customers will enjoy one of the lowest ownership costs of any pick-up truck in the market,” said Shunsuke Okazoe, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia.
Bookings for this Isuzu model, which is available only in white, can be made at any authorised Isuzu dealer nationwide. Without insurance, the price starts at RM92,199.20 in Peninsular Malaysia), RM94,279.60 in Sabah and RM94,170.30 in Sarawak. Each truck comes with a 5-year/150,000-km warranty (whichever occurs first). Imported from Thailand, deliveries of the truck will begin from next month.
